Artist Profile

Matt Tones is an Aboriginal artist based in Brisbane with ancestral ties to Wiradjuri Country in New South Wales. His practice explores connection to land, memory, and the enduring presence of birds across Australian landscapes.

Working through his collection Wings of Country, Tones reflects on the relationship between movement and grounding — birds crossing open skies, farmland, and river systems that echo the environments connected to his heritage. Though living away from ancestral Country, his work carries a continued responsibility to honour that connection.

Tones’ compositions are defined by space, scale, and stillness. Birds are not depicted as ornament, but as carriers of continuity — symbols of resilience, observation, and belonging. His work invites viewers to consider their own relationship to place, and the quiet presence of Country within contemporary Australian life.

Through a balance of cultural reflection and contemporary presentation, Tones creates works that sit confidently in modern spaces while remaining deeply anchored in story and landscape.
